The Colonist has stood proudly on the corner of The Parade and Sydenham Road in Norwood since 1851 when it was first licensed. Originally a modest single-story inn, it was founded by Frederick Hobbs, an English brickmaker who arrived in South Australia aboard the Coromandel in 1837. Over the years, the hotel expanded alongside the growing community, adding a billiard room in 1879 and a second story in 1911.
A true community hub, The Colonist has hosted everything from town meetings to coronial inquests, and a fire inquiry in 1884. With Norwood Oval opening nearby in 1901, the pub became a favourite for locals and visitors alike.
Heritage-listed in 2000, The Colonist retains its historic charm with high ceilings, ornate copper roofing, and scenic wallpaper. Today, it continues to be a place where great food, premium drinks, and good company come together—just as they have for over 170 years.
